One of China's largest and longest-established museums, in a modern building in Hunnan district in the south of Shenyang, with some 120,000 square metres of floor space and more than 110,000 objects; it is best known for old Chinese painting and calligraphy, including rare works by masters of the Tang, Song and Yuan dynasties such as the calligrapher Zhang Xu and Emperor Huizong, for relics of the Liao state founded by the Khitan people, and for Neolithic Hongshan jades. Its halls trace the history of the Liaoning region from prehistory to modern times, alongside ceramics, bronzes and temporary exhibitions that change through the year. Entry is free without booking, Tuesday to Sunday from 9 am to 5 pm with last entry at 4.30 pm, closed on Mondays except public holidays, per visitor guides, which suggest allowing at least three hours.
