Raised in cages, they cannot hunt and do not fear people; release would endanger them and the villages. The sanctuary is the nearest safe thing to freedom.

The largest brown bear sanctuary in the world: Libearty on a forested hill near Zărnești, 30 km from Brașov, shelters more than a hundred bears rescued from restaurant cages, circuses and private zoos — 69 hectares of oak forest with pools and trees the bears climb for the first time in their lives. The visit is a guided morning tour only along a fenced walkway, ninety minutes of quiet walking beside electric fences while feed is thrown and the bears come by name and story: every bear here has a rescue file, and the guides tell it in English and Romanian. The sanctuary is run by the Millions of Friends association and visitors' money feeds the bears. It pairs easily with Bran Castle on the same road and needs a car or an organised tour from Brașov. Children love it; loud noise is forbidden.
