Lido Beach is the best-known beach in Mogadishu, Somalia's capital, on the Indian Ocean. Its broad white sand stretches before a row of restaurants, hotels and cafés, and it fills with residents at weekends, above all on Fridays. In recent years it has become a symbol of everyday life returning to the city. Mogadishu has stood on the ocean for centuries and was an important trading port on the Indian Ocean routes. Its coast is known for white sand, turquoise water and white buildings facing the sea. Young people play football and swim on the beach, watched by local lifeguards. You see soft white sand, clear turquoise water and colourful wooden fishing boats near the shore. White buildings, modern towers and restaurants with bright umbrellas line the front. At low tide flat rocks covered in green algae appear, and the horizon is clear over the ocean. It is about 5 km from central Mogadishu in a straight line. Swim near the lifeguards, as currents can be strong. The UK Foreign Office advises against all travel to Somalia, including Mogadishu, so read the current advice before any planning.
