The Līgatne Nature Trails are a set of laid-out trails in Līgatne, within Gauja National Park in Latvia, about 14 km northeast of Sigulda in a straight line. They were created in 1975 to introduce visitors to Latvia's wild animals, the variety of its nature and the need to protect it. In large enclosures along the trails visitors see mammals of Latvia's forests, including brown bear, wild boar, red fox, lynx, red deer and elk, along with birds such as owls. Most of these animals were found injured or were tamed as young and cannot survive without care. The trails run for more than five kilometres through dense pine and birch forest, across ravines and small wooden bridges, with views over the ancient Gauja valley. In autumn the forest turns yellow and gold. Walking all the trails and seeing the animals takes two to two and a half hours. Entry is by ticket; comfortable walking shoes help, and it suits families and children.
