The entrance to Luoyang's old town, a massive gateway with a tiered tower above a brick wall; per visitor guides it goes back to the Sui dynasty, when Luoyang was a capital, and served as the city's west gate, and it was rebuilt in 2002 and restored in 2014, with views over the old rooftops from its walls. From the gate runs the stone-paved West Street, the liveliest street in the old town, lined with shops and popular eateries and crowded in the evening with vendors and visitors, with old lanes of houses and wooden doors branching off it. A short way east lies the Luoyi Ancient City quarter, rebuilt in traditional style with canals, stone bridges and pavilions lit at night around the Wenfeng Pagoda, an old square brick tower protected at provincial level, and many visitors hire historical costumes there for photographs. Walking the old town is free, while climbing the gate's walls costs CNY 35, with opening from 8:00 to 18:00, per visitor guides. The evening, when the gate and pavilions are lit, is the loveliest time.
