Lillafüred is a mountain resort in a wooded valley of the Bükk Mountains, with a huge stone neo-Renaissance hotel with pointed towers, a calm lake mirroring the forest, hanging gardens on stone terraces and a waterfall tumbling between the rocks. Count András Bethlen, agriculture minister in the 1890s, began developing the resort by Lake Hámori and named it after his niece, «Lilla». The hotel was built between 1927 and 1930, with stained-glass windows showing Hungary's historic castles. Below it are hanging gardens between two streams, holding Hungary's tallest waterfall, about 20 m high. You walk the hanging gardens down to the waterfall, circle the lake or hire a boat, arrive on a small narrow-gauge train through the forest, and can visit nearby caves. It is about 12 km in a straight line west of central Miskolc. It is loveliest in autumn, when the beech and oak forest around the lake turns red and gold.
