Lima Duarte is a town of about 18,000 people in the Zona da Mata of Minas Gerais, at 860 metres in the Mantiqueira foothills, and the municipality that holds the famous Ibitipoca State Park, as well as its main gateway. The area stayed virgin forest until around 1692, when the first bandeirante expeditions appeared; one of their leaders found gold in the bed of the Peixe River, and news of it reached the Governor-General of Brazil in a letter dated 29 July 1694. The town grew and became a city in 1881. Today it lives from services and farming, and visitors pass through on their way to the village of Conceição de Ibitipoca and the park with its caves, waterfalls and viewpoints. Its quiet centre suits a stop to stock up and stay the night before the mountain trip.
