Lin is a small village on a peninsula in Lake Ohrid, near the Qafë Thanë border pass with North Macedonia. It is known for quiet houses above the water and the ruins of an early Byzantine church on the hill, and suits anyone wanting nature and history away from the crowds. People have lived here for a very long time. Recent finds suggest that the pile dwelling site at Lin goes back about 8,500 years, among the oldest of its kind in Europe. On the hill stand the foundations and mosaics of a 6th-century early Christian church, a cultural monument within the Ohrid heritage area. You walk through the village lanes to the water, past small fishing boats and simple jetties, then climb a short path to the hill, where the site overlooks the lake. The mosaics may be covered for protection at times, so ask locals who holds the key or can point the way. Lin is 18 km in a straight line from the Pogradec shore and about 22 km by road, reached by car or taxi. The road runs close to the crossing into North Macedonia. Services are limited, so bring what you need, or eat at a small restaurant if you find one open.
