Lindau is a town and island at the eastern end of Lake Constance in Bavaria, southern Germany, close to the Austrian and Swiss borders, about 156 km southwest of Munich in a straight line. The historic town stands on an island of 0.68 square kilometres, linked to the mainland by a road bridge and a railway causeway. Lindau's coat of arms shows a linden tree, a nod to the supposed origin of its name. The harbour entrance is guarded by a huge stone Bavarian lion on one pier, facing a tall white lighthouse on the other, the only lighthouse in Bavaria. Historic houses and the old Mangturm tower line the harbour. Sailing boats and ships moor in the small harbour between the lion and the lighthouse, and the snowy Swiss and Austrian Alps are mirrored in the calm water on the horizon. Inside the island are cobbled streets and colourful houses with painted facades. Visitors stroll the harbour promenade, climb the lighthouse, explore the old town and take boats to Bregenz in Austria or the island of Mainau. Sunset over the harbour is the loveliest time.
