The wall of the old city of Linhai, seat of Taizhou prefecture from 591 to 1993, first raised under the Eastern Jin in the fourth or fifth century and strengthened over the centuries against both attack and flood; 4,730 metres of it survive, climbing the hills and running along the Lingjiang River, so that people call it «the Great Wall south of the Yangtze», and it has been on China's tentative World Heritage list since 2006. Visitors walk the wall between watchtowers and gates, up the hill and down to the riverbank, looking over the old town's rooftops and Donghu, the East Lake. Below the wall runs Ziyang Street, once the town's richest trading street, stretching over a kilometre between wooden houses and shops. The old town is free, and a combined ticket for the wall and East Lake costs about CNY 70, per visitor guides.

Halal choices are few in Linhai; Taizhou city has restaurants run by Muslims under the halal sign, while the old town's restaurants serve seafood and pork, so ask about ingredients.
