Linnansaari National Park is a protected area in Finland's South Savo and North Savo regions, lying in the middle of Lake Haukivesi, part of the greater Saimaa lake system. It is about 33 km in a straight line from Savonlinna. The park was created to protect the nature of the Finnish lakeland. On the main island an old croft still farms its fields by traditional slash-and-burn, keeping alive the old rural landscape and the plants and animals tied to it. Most of the island is natural coniferous forest, and the critically endangered Saimaa ringed seal lives in the park. Rocky islets covered in pine scatter across calm blue water, and on the main island red wooden cottages and grey barns stand among green meadows and traditional wooden fences. From the rocky hilltops the lake and its islands stretch to the horizon. The islands can only be reached by boat, with summer boats leaving from the nearby mainland. If you see a seal, keep your distance and do not disturb it.
