Liškiava is a historic village in the Varėna district of southern Lithuania, on the bank of the Nemunas river near Lake Liškiavis, about 10 km north of the resort of Druskininkai in a straight line. Very few people live there. At the end of the 14th century Grand Duke Vytautas ordered a stone castle built on the hill, but it was never completed, and only the ruins of one tower remain. In the 18th century a large complex with a brick Baroque church was built in the village. A leisure boat route links Liškiava with Druskininkai along the river. The village sits on a green slope above a wide bend of the Nemunas, with the stone tower ruin crowning the hill and a view over the river winding between forests and meadows. Stones tied to local legends lie in the fields nearby. Visitors climb the castle hill for the view of the Nemunas, wander the village, and some arrive by boat from Druskininkai in summer. The village is small and quiet, needing an hour or two.
