A historic district east of the Singapore River, known to Indian Singaporeans as «Tekka», which began as a cattle-trading area where Indian migrants worked and is today the heart of the city's Indian community. Its streets burst with colour and scent, with spice, fabric and gold jewellery shops, flower garlands and painted shophouses, and they are decked with lights and ornate arches for Indian festivals such as Deepavali. The district has the famous Tekka Market for produce, spices and food, the distinctive Abdul Gaffoor Mosque, the Angullia Mosque and many restaurants serving Indian dishes, including halal South Indian and Indian-Muslim food. Wandering is free and open all day; it's busiest at weekends. It's loveliest in the evening when the shops light up, and it's easy to reach by metro.
