Liyu Lake lies in Chinan Village, Shoufeng Township, Hualien County, eastern Taiwan, at the foot of Mount Liyu, about 11 km southwest of Hualien city in a straight line. The Amis people call it Fanaw, meaning pool of water. Liyu means carp in Chinese, and the lake is full of them; the name comes from neighbouring Mount Liyu. The lake is about 1.6 km long and 930 metres wide, covering 104 hectares, making it the largest inland lake in Hualien County. Forested green mountains surround the lake and are mirrored in its calm water, with footpaths along the shore and a bike path of about 5 km circling it. Every April thousands of fireflies light up the night above the lake. Visitors rent light boats, try water sports, and cycle or walk around the lake. The nearby Chinan forest recreation area displays old logging trains, and the lake can be reached by bus from Hualien railway station.
