Loma del Pliegue Tumbado, the «Hill of the Overturned Fold», is a hill in Los Glaciares National Park above El Chaltén, named after an overturned rock fold in its layers. Its trail differs from the area's others: it does not enter a valley but climbs above them, opening from the top one of the widest views in the whole region over Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre together, Lake Viedma and the glaciers. The trail is about twenty kilometres there and back, with a steady climb of some 1,100 metres, taking seven to eight hours. It starts in lenga forest and then comes out onto open slopes, up to a viewpoint at around 1,500 metres; from there a steep extra hour leads to the summit for a full 360-degree view. The walk is free. Because the trail is high, treeless and exposed to wind, bring a windproof jacket and warm clothes; light snow is not rare even in midsummer.
