The highest, largest and deepest of Jiuzhaigou's lakes, lying at 3,150 metres at the head of the south-eastern Zechawa valley; it is 7.5 kilometres long and up to 103 metres deep, a long crescent between mountains whose peaks are snow-covered for most of the year. No river flows out of it: it takes its water from snowmelt and loses it by seeping into the ground, local tales tell of a monster living in its depths, and a boardwalk on its rim looks out over it. On the way down from it lies the Five-Colour Pond, one of the smallest bodies of water in the valley but among the clearest and most richly coloured, its bed showing blue, green and turquoise, a short walk from the road. The lake is covered by the Jiuzhaigou Valley ticket, CNY 190 plus CNY 90 for the bus in season, per visitor guides. The altitude here is high, so move slowly, and bring warm clothes even in summer.
