Longteng Bridge, officially the Yutengping Bridge, is a former railway bridge in Longteng Village, Sanyi Township, Miaoli County, north-central Taiwan, about 26 km north of Taichung in a straight line. It is known as the Broken Bridge. The bridge was built in 1906 under Japanese rule, designed by the American engineers Theodore Cooper and C. C. Schneider, with a central steel truss flanked by brick masonry arches. The bridge and the village were named after a local plant once grown around a nearby lake. An earthquake in April 1935 damaged it beyond repair, so a new iron bridge was built 80 metres to the west in 1938 and the steel truss was taken down. What remains are massive red-brick piers and arches, some tilted and cracked, standing among green fields and trees like ancient ruins. Plants grow on their tops, and the modern railway bridge runs behind them. Visitors wander among the piers on the paths of the surrounding park and take photos beneath the red arches. It is quiet in the morning, and late-afternoon light brings out the red of the brick.
