A peninsula at Rab''s northern tip holding **twenty-two sandy beaches** — an exceptional figure on a limestone coast like the Adriatic. The reason is geological: Lopar''s rock is **sandstone** rather than limestone, softer and quicker to break down, so it produced actual sand instead of pebbles. The cliffs around the peninsula are themselves sand-coloured and wind-carved into odd shapes. Its best-known beach is **Rajska plaža** («paradise beach»): a 1,500-metre sandy arc whose water is **exceptionally shallow** — you can walk hundreds of metres with the water at your knees. That makes it, almost without competition, the best beach in Croatia for small children. The other side of that: **shallow water means warm water**, but it also means severe crowding in August. Note: Lopar has **marked naturist beaches** well away from the general ones, with clear signage. Note: a **ferry to the island of Krk** (Valbiska) leaves from Lopar, so the two islands can be linked without returning to the mainland.

Few, and known by name, because the coast is limestone and beaches are generally pebble. The four that matter: **Lopar** on Rab — by far the largest concentration, twenty-two sandy beaches with shallow water, and **the best in the country for small children**. **Lumbarda** on Korčula — Pržina and Bilin Žal, sandy and small. **Sahara** on the island of Susak near Lošinj. And **Nin** near Zadar — a very long shallow sand beach, known for its medicinal mud. ⚠ What is marketed as «sandy» is sometimes **fine pebble** — Zlatni Rat on Brač, for instance, is pebble despite its photographs. ⚠ The trade-off with sand is that **the water is less clear** than on rocky beaches, because sand lifts into it with movement.
