A rocky hill about 108 m high in Shilou, Panyu, south-east Guangzhou, overlooking the Shiziyang channel of the Pearl River; its history goes back to the Western Han, and it was worked as a quarry for centuries until the early 19th century. The quarrying left standing rocks shaped like lotus flowers rising from water, which gave the hill its name, and the old pits have become red cliffs, deep pools, caves and passages between the rocks; «Lotus Peak Overlooking the Sea» was chosen in 2002 as one of Guangzhou's New Eight Sights. Tickets cost CNY 54, half price for students and minors, and it is open from 7 am to 5 pm all year, per visitor guides.
