**Free** โ the village is open; what you pay for is **the boat**. Getting there: drive to **Hora Sfakion** and take the ferry (about 15 minutes, several times a day in season), or come from **Agia Roumeli** if you are walking out of Samaria. โ **Boat timetables are seasonal, thin out sharply outside summer and are cancelled in wind** โ check on the day, and never plan on the last boat without a fallback. โ **No cars**: your luggage is carried by hand; do not arrive with a huge case. โ **No ATM, no pharmacy and no large shop** โ bring cash and your medication. โ There is **no broad sandy beach** in the village itself; you swim off the jetties and pebbles. The walk to **Glyka Nera** takes about an hour on a rocky, shadeless path โ or take the water taxi.

You arrive **by boat or on foot**, or you do not arrive. It sits on a **completely sheltered little bay** between mountain and sea on the south coast of Sfakia: one row of white houses with blue doors curving round clear blue water, with a rock face rising vertically behind. The permanent population is **a few dozen people**. That isolation is the product: **no engine noise at all**, and the only sound is water and boats. The bay is **protected from the wind**, so the sea here stays calm when it is rough elsewhere. From here you walk to **Glyka Nera** (Sweetwater) โ a well-known pebble beach where cold fresh water seeps up from under the stones, about an hour along a coastal path โ and to **Marmara** in the other direction. โ And it is by nature a **slow place**: anyone wanting activity and nightlife will not find them.

**At least one night if you can.** A day trip works โ morning ferry from Hora Sfakion, back in the afternoon โ but it misses the point of the place: Loutro **at midday** is relatively busy with ferry visitors, and its real quality comes **after the last boat leaves** and before the first arrives, when the village drops back to a few dozen people and complete silence. โ But note that the accommodation is **simple** โ small rooms above the water rather than hotels, the choice is limited and it **books up early** in summer. Anyone who needs strong air conditioning, hotel service or a wide choice of food will find the night long. The rule: **one or two nights are excellent, a week is too much** for most people.
**The standard route**: drive or take the bus from Chania to **Hora Sfakion** (about two hours), park there, then the ferry, about **15 minutes**. There are also smaller **water taxis** on demand at a higher price. And **on foot** from Hora Sfakion along the coastal E4 path in roughly two hours โ beautiful but rocky and shadeless. โ Cancellations are always about **wind**: the south coast is exposed to strong southerlies and easterlies, and when they get up the ferries stop, sometimes for a whole day. So: **do not book a flight for the morning after** a night in Loutro, ask about the weather at Hora Sfakion before crossing, and keep a day of slack. Winter and late autumn are far more prone to cancellation.
