Demänovská Cave of Liberty
Coloured chambers and an underground river, Slovakia's best-known cave.

Slovakia's largest national park — some **728 square kilometres** — running as an east-west chain 80 kilometres long through the middle of the country. The difference from the neighbouring High Tatras is that these mountains are **rounded and grassy** rather than sharp rock. The highest is **Ďumbier** at 2,043 metres, and the upper slopes are open meadow carrying a long ridge route people walk over several days. Underground the story changes. The rock here is **limestone**, holding over two hundred caves. The best known are the **Demänovská Cave of Liberty**, with coloured chambers and an underground river, and the **Demänovská Ice Cave**, which keeps permanent ice that does not melt in summer. These forests are among the most wildlife-rich in Europe: **brown bear**, **wolf**, **lynx** and **chamois** all live here in real numbers, and Slovakia is one of the continent's great bear strongholds. Note: **the bears are real and not a marketing line** — follow the trail guidance, move in a group, and make noise at blind corners. Note: **the park is open and free**, but the caves are paid and by guided tour only.

The chance is **real but low** — Slovakia has around 1,200 brown bears and most avoid people. The first rule is **do not surprise one**: move in a group, talk or make noise especially at blind corners and near streams where water masks your footsteps, and avoid walking at dawn or dusk. **Leave no food** or rubbish, and never approach a cub — the most dangerous situation is standing between a mother and her young. If you do see one: **do not run** (running invites a chase), back away slowly while facing it, speaking in a calm steady voice. ⚠ Stay on marked trails — most incidents happen off them.
