The Luanda Bay Promenade is a broad seafront walkway on Avenida 4 de Fevereiro, running along Luanda Bay in front of the Angolan capital's centre. Locals call it the Marginal, and residents come here to walk, run and sit by the sea. It is the best place to see modern Luanda and its towers beside the blue bay. The sandy Luanda Island shelters the bay from the ocean, and Paulo Dias de Novais founded the city on its shore in 1575 and 1576. The Lower City, where most people lived, grew by the bay, while the Upper City was administrative and military. The promenade was rebuilt in the 2010s into a wide walkway with cycle lanes. You see calm blue water in a curve and a pale stone walkway lined with palm trees and lamp posts. Behind it rise modern glass towers and older colonial buildings. From above the bay looks like a blue arc between the city and the peninsula, with the Fortress of São Miguel on its hill. It is about 2.6 km from central Luanda in a straight line, and the Fortress of São Miguel about 1 km. Late afternoon is the best time to walk. Watch your belongings and avoid empty stretches at night.
