A green hill rising 181 metres on a peninsula that reaches into the sea south of central Sanya, and the best place to see the whole city: from the top you look over downtown Sanya and its river to the north, Dadonghai beach to the east and the South China Sea stretching away to the south. Its name means «the deer looks back», after a legend of the Li people, Hainan's original inhabitants, about a young hunter who chased a deer to the edge of the sea; the deer turned to face him and became a beautiful girl whom he married, and the legend gave Sanya its nickname, «Deer City». On the summit stands a 12-metre stone sculpture of the hunter, the deer and the girl by the sculptor Lin Yuhao, and the park covers about 83 hectares of tropical monsoon forest with paths and viewing decks; the loveliest visit is at sunset, when the city lights up below. Entry is free and the electric cart to the top costs about CNY 28 return, with the park open from 8:00 to 22:30, per visitor guides. Walking up is possible but tiring in the heat.
