Luís Correia is a town on the coast of Piauí, near Parnaíba, one of only four coastal municipalities in the state and one of its most visited by tourists and beachgoers all year round. It began in the early nineteenth century as a fishing village called Amarração, «mooring», after the practice of tying up boats as they landed on the shore. It lost its autonomy in 1931 to become a district of Parnaíba, took the name of the journalist and writer Luiz Moraes Correia in 1935, and later became a municipality again. The municipality includes part of the Parnaíba Delta Environmental Protection Area, and its long beaches are lined with dunes and coconut palms. It makes a comfortable stop for visitors to the Parnaíba Delta or travellers on the north-eastern coast between Jericoacoara and the Lençóis Maranhenses.
