A small village at the island''s eastern tip with two things found nowhere else: **sand** and the **Grk** grape. Sand first. The Adriatic coast is limestone and its beaches are generally rock or pebble, but Lumbarda is a geological exception: its soil is genuinely **sandy**, and its beaches — **Pržina** and **Bilin Žal** — are among the few real sand beaches in Croatia, with shallow water that warms quickly. That makes them **the island''s best beaches for children**. The sand is also the reason for the second thing. **Grk** is a white grape grown **nowhere else in the world** — it needs this specific sandy soil, and attempts to move it have failed. It also has a rare property: its flowers are **female only** and cannot self-pollinate, so another variety (usually Plavac) must be planted among it for it to fruit. This is also where the **Lumbarda tablet** was found, the fourth-century BC stone that is Croatia''s oldest written document, recording the division of this very village''s land among Greek settlers. Note: **six kilometres from Korčula town** — by bus, bicycle, or about an hour and a quarter on foot.

The island is one of Croatia''s important **white wine** regions, and its two main varieties are grown almost nowhere else. **Pošip** is the more widespread: a dry, full-bodied white with yellow-fruit flavours, originating in the village of **Čara** in the island''s middle and spreading from there through Dalmatia. **Grk** is far rarer: **grown only at Lumbarda**, unable to grow outside its sandy soil, and produced in such small quantity that it is seldom exported. ⚠ Practically: the small **Lumbarda** growers receive visitors for tastings, and most are family operations where it is better to **call ahead** than turn up. ⚠ The villages of **Čara** and **Smokvica** in the island''s centre are the heart of Pošip, visited by car on the road to Vela Luka.
