An old water town in Wuzhong, about 18 km east of Suzhou, once called Puli after the Tang poet Lu Guimeng, who retired here; its present name goes back to the six straight rivers that cross it. In 2003 it was named among China's famous historic towns, and in 2004 it won a UNESCO award for heritage conservation. Old stone bridges, some dating back to the Song, cross its canals, lined with white houses under black tiles and trees, and wooden boats glide along the water; old family mansions, a museum and an old rice shop open on a combined ticket. It is calmer than Zhouzhuang and Tongli. The town is free to enter, the combined ticket for its houses and museums is about CNY 52, a boat costs about CNY 150 for six, and the houses open from 8 am to 5 pm, per visitor guides.
