The Baturité Massif is a geological formation rising out of semi-arid central Ceará, taking in several towns including Baturité, Pacoti, Palmácia, Guaramiranga, Mulungu and Aratuba, with igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks, the oldest dating from the Precambrian. Its best-known town is Guaramiranga, whose centre sits at about 865 metres and which is nicknamed the «Switzerland of Ceará» for its cool climate: temperatures in the rainy season range from 17 to 23 degrees, and a low of 10 degrees was recorded in 1963. Its main lookout is Pico Alto, at about 1,115 metres one of the highest points in the state. On clear days Pico Alto looks out over the sertão, and some say the coastline can be seen, and the hills have other viewpoints such as the 360-degree lookout. Visit at weekends, as many places close during the week, and bring warm layers for the mist.
