A majestic waterfall in a narrow gorge at the foot of the Tengger mountains north of Bromo, counted among Java's tallest, pouring from a towering cliff into a cylindrical rock chamber cloaked in moss and plants, whose walls drip curtains of water like rain. Legend says Gajah Mada, the famous commander of the Majapahit kingdom, spent his final days meditating here. You reach it on a walk of about half an hour up the gorge, crossing the stream and rocks, then passing beneath a falling curtain of water before the main basin, so you will get wet. The place is shady and damp, with light filtering from above in a magical scene. Entry is a token fee, a local guide is usually required at an agreed price, and raincoats and shoes are rented at the entrance. The gorge may close after heavy rain because of flash-flood risk. It is usually combined with Bromo on the same day, after sunrise. Bring a change of clothes and a waterproof bag, and come in the dry season.
