A tower on a small rocky island in the Bosphorus off the Üsküdar shore on the Asian side, reachable only by boat. The site has been used since the Byzantine period: a watchtower, a point for levying tolls on shipping, and a lighthouse. The present structure has been reshaped repeatedly, with a major restoration completed in recent years. Its name comes from a recurring legend: a sultan or emperor shut his daughter in the tower to protect her from a prophecy that she would die of a snakebite, and the snake arrived in a basket of grapes. The story has many versions and no historical basis, but it has attached itself to the place. What makes it worth visiting is the position itself: you are in the middle of the Bosphorus with the city around you on both sides — the European shore with its mosques and towers, the Asian behind you. No other point in Istanbul gives you that. Access is by boat from Üsküdar or Kabataş, and the ticket normally includes the crossing. Capacity is limited and queues are long in season — booking ahead is advisable.

Through the official site in advance, as the island's capacity is limited and the boats run to a timetable. In season slots can sell out for days. Check the weather too, as boats stop in strong wind and rough water.
A Bosphorus cruise is a ferry running the length of the strait, showing you both shores, the palaces and the fortresses from the water without long stops; it is cheaper and takes hours. The Maiden's Tower is a single destination where you land, climb and look around. They are different things, and the cruise has the better claim if you can only do one.
