Makedonium, or the Ilinden memorial, is a commemorative complex in the mountain town of Kruševo. Visitors come for its strange futuristic form, as the round white dome with oval windows looks like a spacecraft among the pines. It is one of the best known modern buildings in North Macedonia. It opened on 2 August 1974, on the 30th anniversary of the second session of the anti-fascist assembly and the 71st anniversary of the Ilinden uprising of 1903. Jordan and Iskra Grabuloski designed it, and it is dedicated to those who took part in the uprising and to the region's Second World War partisans. The grounds cover 5 hectares. The dome stands out for its upper windows of stained glass, and inside lie the tomb of Nikola Karev, president of the Kruševo Republic, and a bust of the singer Toše Proeski. Four windows face places linked to the uprising. The site also has a plateau of sculptures called «Breaking the Chains», a crypt carved with names and events, and an amphitheatre decorated with colourful mosaics. It lies on the edge of Kruševo, 24 km in a straight line from Marko's Towers in Prilep. The town is high up, so bring a light jacket even in summer. Treat the place with respect, as it has national standing for many people. A clear day is best, so you can enjoy the glass colours and the views through the windows.
