A long seafront promenade running for kilometres along the Gulf of Mexico beside Campeche, with a broad footpath and cycle lane, benches, fountains and exercise spots; it is where townspeople love to walk and jog in the evening. Its finest moment is sunset, when the sun drops straight into the sea in front of the city, turning sky and water orange and pink while people gather at the edge to watch. The sea here is calm and shallow, not great for swimming but lovely to look at. The promenade passes sculptures and monuments, and sometimes hosts events and festivals. From its southern end you can climb to the San Miguel fort on the hill. It is safe and lit at night, and close to the Sea Gate of the walled town, so combine it with a walk round the walls. Avoid midday, when the sun is fierce.

The water is shallow and not set up for swimming; the promenade is for walking and sunsets. Better beaches lie outside the city.
