One of the largest family houses in Macau, a traditional residential compound of about 4,000 square metres built in 1869 by Zheng Wenrui, father of the reformist thinker Zheng Guanying, who wrote his best-known book, «Words of Warning in Times of Prosperity», here in the late Qing era. The house is built in Cantonese style with grey brick, carved timber and interlocking courtyards and passages, with Western touches in its windows, ceilings and decoration that reflect the meeting of cultures Macau is known for; it is part of the Historic Centre of Macau World Heritage Site. In the late twentieth century the family moved out and more than 300 tenants lived in it, and it fell into decay; the government took it over in 2001 and spent eight years restoring it before opening it to visitors, making it a fine example of Macau's great Chinese houses. Entry is free, with opening from 10:00 to 18:00 and closure on Wednesdays, per visitor guides. It lies close to the old Largo do Lilau, so the two fit into a walk through the south of the old town.
