Mangaratiba is a town of about 41,000 people on the «Costa Verde» of Rio de Janeiro state, some 85 kilometres from Rio, between Atlantic forest mountains and the calm, island-filled bay of Ilha Grande. Its lands hold many small, sheltered beaches, with islands offshore that can be visited by boat, and ferries leave its pier for Ilha Grande and the village of Abraão. The municipality lives from services and tourism, with bananas and sugar cane grown in its countryside. The town also has a film connection: parts of Sylvester Stallone's «The Expendables» were shot in its centre, and the pier blown up in the film is its own. It makes an easy stop on the coast road from Rio towards Angra dos Reis and Paraty.
