Proboscis monkeys
Borneo's long-nosed monkey.
A protected mangrove forest on Balikpapan Bay, looked after by the neighbourhood's residents, and one of the best places near the city to see the long-nosed proboscis monkey, found only on Borneo, in its natural habitat among the mangroves. Visitors walk a wooden boardwalk through the trees or take a small boat along the channels between the mangroves, with a local guide who knows where the monkeys are. Waterbirds, crabs and mudskippers can be seen too. The best times are early morning or just before sunset, when the monkeys are active. There is a token fee for the boardwalk, with the boat extra at an agreed price. It is simple and uncommercial, and its income supports protecting the forest. Come in the morning or late afternoon, keep quiet to see the monkeys, and do not feed them. Bring insect repellent.
