A coastal mangrove forest on the eastern side of Abu Dhabi island, protected by the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi and making up about 75 per cent of the UAE's mangrove forest. Its green channels run beside the Eastern Ring Road, within sight of the city's towers. The forest is home to many birds, including grey herons and western reef herons, along with mottled crabs and small fish sheltering among the roots, and flamingos sometimes stop by. Visitors walk a raised boardwalk among the trees or explore the channels by kayak, paddleboard or boat with operators based at the Eastern Mangroves promenade marina; calm morning tides make for the best trips. Looking at the mangroves is free and possible around the clock, best by daylight, while excursions are paid: a two-hour kayak tour costs about 160 AED, according to the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi.
