Mangueirão, officially the Estádio Estadual Jornalista Edgar Proença or Pará Olympic Stadium, is the biggest football ground in northern Brazil, seating about 53,645, the eighth-largest in the country. Pará's leading clubs, Paysandu, Remo and Tuna Luso, play here, and its most famous fixture is the «Re-Pa», the Remo–Paysandu derby, one of the fiercest rivalries in Brazilian football. It was designed in 1969 by the local architect Alcyr Meira, after the state governor ordered a 120,000-seat stadium, later scaled down to 70,000. It opened on 4 March 1978 but stayed unfinished for years, with only one covered stand, until a 2000–2002 renovation completed it and added an athletics track. Its biggest crowd after that renovation, nearly 58,000, came for Paysandu against Boca Juniors in the 2003 Copa Libertadores. In 2021 the state announced a second full renovation to modern standards. A match at Mangueirão, above all the derby, is a loud experience; tickets are sold through the clubs' channels according to the fixture list.
