Mar de las Pampas is a small beach village south of Villa Gesell, built in a pine forest on the dunes. Its story began in 1957, when investors bought some 300 hectares of sand, planted shrubs and trees and built a barrier dune parallel to the sea to shield the seedlings from salt and wind, until the area became a dense forest. Today the village is known for its calm: winding sand streets among the trees with no asphalt, wooden houses and cabins scattered through the woods, small cafés and shops in its centre, and a wide, quiet beach away from the bigger towns' crowds. It draws couples and families looking to rest. Wandering and the beach are free; the season is December to March, and out of season the village is almost empty and very quiet.
