**A small island shaped like a turtle, in a bay where turtles actually nest** โ not a charming coincidence but one of the most important nesting sites in the whole Mediterranean. It lies in **Laganas Bay**, a **national marine park** created to protect the **loggerhead turtle** (*Caretta caretta*). Females come each summer to the bay's sandy beaches to lay their eggs in the sand at night, then return to the sea. The island itself is uninhabited: **two sand beaches** at either end, a **sea cave** a boat can enter, and rock and scrub between โ and from a distance its back and head resemble a swimming turtle, hence the common name **"Turtle Island"**. โ Staying overnight, camping and approaching nesting areas are all forbidden. โ It is reached by boat from **Laganas** or **Limni Keriou** in about half an hour.

**By passive watching from a distance, and choosing an operator who knows the rules โ bad behaviour here genuinely kills.** โ **The right way**: **a slow boat** that stops, cuts its engine and waits; a **glass-bottomed boat**; or **quiet swimming** in the bay. Turtles surface to breathe, so you see the back and head from a distance. โ **What actually harms them**: **boat propellers** โ the **leading cause of turtle injury** in the bay, which is why the park imposes exclusion zones and speed limits; **touching, riding or holding one** strips the protective layer from its shell and exhausts it; and **chasing one while swimming** stops it surfacing to breathe. โ **And on the beach at night**: **no light at all** โ no torch, no flash, no phone screen; light disorients a nesting female **and leads hatchlings inland instead of to the sea, where they die**. โ **Choose an operator** who states the park's rules explicitly and does not promise "guaranteed" sightings.
**The loggerhead turtle โ a threatened species, and Laganas Bay is among its most important Mediterranean nesting sites.** โ **Why here**: a female returns **to the beach where she herself hatched** to lay โ meaning the nesting site is not a choice that can be relocated; if the beach is destroyed, the turtles do not go elsewhere. Laganas Bay has what they need: **soft sand**, a gentle gradient and calm shallow water. โ **The cycle**: the female comes ashore at night, digs a chamber, lays around **a hundred eggs**, covers them and returns to the sea โ and about two months later the hatchlings emerge at night and run for the water, **navigating by the light of the horizon over the sea**. โ **Which is why artificial light kills**: it leads them onto roads and towards hotels. โ **And why umbrellas and loungers on nesting beaches are restricted** โ the chambers under the sand get crushed. โ These are not formalities: **the bay is protected because the species is genuinely at risk**.
