Maria Cristina is a tall waterfall on the Agus River in northern Mindanao. Two columns of white water plunge from a forested cliff, split by a rock at the brink, and thick spray rises from the river below. The falls are 98 m high and are sometimes called the «twin falls» because a rock at the top divides the flow. They are named after the Spanish queen Maria Christina of Austria. They lie 9.3 km southwest of Iligan City and are the main power source for the city's industries, through the Agus VI hydroelectric plant commissioned in 1953. You see them from the viewing area in front of the falls, with the two columns, the spray and the forest around them. The flow varies with the operation of the power plant. The falls are about 8 km in a straight line west of central Iligan. The UK advises against all travel to western and central Mindanao and all but essential travel to the rest of the island, so check current advice before you go.
