The Mark Rothko Art Centre is an art centre in Daugavpils in south-eastern Latvia, the birthplace of the painter Mark Rothko. It is housed in the artillery arsenal of Daugavpils Fortress and opened on 24 April 2013. Rothko was born here in 1903, moved with his family to the United States and became one of the best-known abstract painters of the 20th century. The centre shows six of his original paintings on permanent loan from his family, the only place in Eastern Europe where his originals are always on view. The arsenal building dates from 1833. From outside you see a long building with pale yellow walls, large arched windows and white columns, around a wide paved square with an old cannon. The fortress's earth ramparts and other yellow buildings surround it, and inside are wide white halls hung with paintings of large glowing colour fields. It is inside Daugavpils Fortress, about 3 km from the city centre in a straight line.
