A long sandy beach on the Mediterranean in the town of Martil, about eleven kilometres north-east of Tetouan, the city's nearest beach and its best-known summer resort. A wide palm-lined corniche with cafés and restaurants runs along it, with the Rif mountains rising to the south and the Cabo Negro headland to the north. The town's name comes from the Spanish name of its river, the Río Martín, from the days of the Spanish protectorate in northern Morocco. On the seafront stands an old crenellated tower, one of its landmarks, and an old Spanish church has become a cultural centre. In summer the town fills with holidaymakers from Morocco and abroad, horse rides are offered on the sand, and the corniche stays lively late into the night. Outside summer the beach turns quiet and is good for long walks at sunrise or sunset. The beach is free, and umbrellas and chairs can be rented in season. Swim in supervised areas and watch the flags. Grand taxis from Tetouan take about a quarter of an hour.
