Masuleh is a mountain town in Gilan province in northern Iran, at 1,050 metres in the Alborz range near the southern Caspian coast. It lies about 60 km southwest of Rasht and about 32 km west of Fuman. Its people are Talysh and Gilak and speak Talysh. The town itself spans a 100-metre difference in height. The area developed after the Ilkhanid period, and traditional iron-making was a mainstay of its economy. Ochre houses climb the mountainside tier upon tier. The houses have carved wooden windows and doors, mist often wraps the green mountains, and a bazaar in the lanes sells crafts and carpets. The lanes are steep and full of steps, so wear comfortable shoes. It is cooler than the coast, so bring a jacket. The UK Foreign Office currently advises against all travel to Iran and warns that British nationals risk detention, so check official guidance before making any plans.
