Matadi Bridge is a suspension bridge across the Congo River at Matadi, once known as the Pont Maréchal. It crosses the river at its narrowest point, just downstream of Matadi port, and is the only bridge over the Congo River proper. It looks out over a broad green valley and a city built on hills. The bridge was completed in 1983 by a consortium of Japanese companies. Its main span is 520 metres, and it was said to be the longest suspension bridge in Africa from its opening until 2018. Its construction used 14,000 tonnes of steel and was funded by the Japanese government with about 34.5 billion yen. You see two tall grey steel towers on either bank, with long cables between them carrying the road over the brown river. Rolling green hills surround the bridge, with the city's houses on the slopes. From nearby hills the bridge and the winding river show between the mountains. It is about 5.5 km from central Matadi in a straight line. The bridge is best seen from the road and nearby hills. It is a key structure, so do not take photos from it where this is forbidden, and follow the guards.
