A small local island in the middle of North Ari (Alif Alif) Atoll, about 85 kilometres west of Malé, some 775 metres long and 475 wide. Its people live from yellowfin tuna fishing and tourism; there are about ten guesthouses, and many islanders work at the nearby resorts. About a hundred metres away lies an uninhabited sandbank known as the picnic island, which visitors reach at low tide by wading or swimming, with white sand and clear shallow water. On one of Mathiveri's beaches stingrays often rest in the shallows, sometimes with small reef sharks, per visitor guides. The island is a good-value diving base with reefs close by, and its lagoon holds a shipwreck at roughly 4 to 10 metres, suitable for snorkelling and diving. Trips run to nearby manta ray sites, per visitor guides. Speedboats from Malé take about two hours per visitor guides. It is a local island, so modest dress is advisable away from the tourist beach, alcohol is not served, and December to April is the driest season.
