Matinhos is a beach town of about 42,000 people on the Paraná coast, some 110 kilometres from Curitiba between Paranaguá and Guaratuba, affectionately called the «Sweetheart of Paraná» because its municipal independence fell on 12 June, Brazil's Valentine's Day. Three to five thousand years ago the area was home to the «Sambaqui people» who left shell mounds, followed by the Carijó. Lying between Paranaguá and Guaratuba, it was shaped by settlers from both; people lived here from the eighteenth century, and it grew as a resort in the twentieth. Its beaches run between rocky hills and open sea, some suited to surfing, with small islands offshore. From its south, the car ferry crosses the mouth of Guaratuba Bay. It is a close summer escape for Curitiba.
