Europe's highest cable-car station: 3,883 metres atop the Klein Matterhorn โ the luxurious glass Crossings fly you from Zermatt over crevassed glaciers into a world whose snow never leaves, the famous Matterhorn at arm's length from its powerful 'other' angle. On top: a terrace of 38 Alpine summits with their four-thousanders; the world's deepest Glacier Palace carved fifteen metres under the ice surface; summit cinema; and the only permanent summer skiing at this breadth โ plus, since 2023, the historic Alpine X crossing: the cable car continuing over the glacier to the border, landing you in Italy at Cervinia's terrace โ a complete Alpine crossing without one walked step. This is Zermatt's grand ride โ highest and dearest โ and clear weather is its non-negotiable condition.
38 great summits around โ Monte Rosa to Mont Blanc in one eye.
Tunnels and carvings fifteen metres under the living glacier's skin.
The cable car continuing to Italy over the glacier โ an Alpine border without a step.
The permanent summer field โ world teams training beside you.
Zermatt's first question: this is higher, snowier, plusher-cabined โ Matterhorn from its strong east angle; that is a heritage cog train with open views the whole climb โ Matterhorn in full postcard pyramid mirrored in the Riffelsee. Two days take both; one clear day: Gornergrat for the immortal picture, this for those whose goal is snow and altitude itself.
Excellent on its terms: easy cabins, the Ice Palace their pure magic, terrace snow their playground โ but altitude is serious: break the ascent at Trockener Steg, watch small ones for headache or listlessness and descend at once upon it, and dress them for full August winter. Under four, consider gentler-altitude Gornergrat instead.
Since 2023 the Crossings continue over the Theodul glacier to the border pass and Italy's Testa Grigia station โ a polenta lunch over Cervinia's view and an afternoon return: 'two countries above the clouds'. Check its seasonal running and carry the passport โ checks are rare, the rule stands.
