A quiet green botanical garden of 14 hectares in the heart of Medellín, named after Joaquín Antonio Uribe, with thousands of flowers and tropical plants and more than 130 bird species recorded. It is a free refuge from the city's bustle. Its best-known feature is the «Orquideorama», a modern structure shaped like giant interlocking wooden flowers, sheltering an important collection of orchids, Colombia's national flower. Flower shows and events are sometimes held beneath it. You walk paths among tall trees, a cactus garden and a small lake home to turtles and birds, and you may see large iguanas sunning on the grass. There is also a butterfly house and an ancient-plants trail for small fees. The garden suits families well, and next door is the interactive science museum Parque Explora. Entry is free, and it is closed on Mondays except public holidays.
