A wide sandy Atlantic beach in the town of Mehdia near the mouth of the Sebou river, minutes from Kenitra and about thirty kilometres north-east of Rabat. It is Kenitra's nearest beach and a summer escape for people from the capital. Its strong waves have made it one of the area's best-known spots for surfing and bodyboarding. Cafés and fish restaurants line the sand, camel and horse rides are on offer, and to the north the harbour's stone breakwater at the river mouth draws anglers. Other sights lie close by: the Kasbah of Mehdia above the river mouth, the Sidi Boughaba reserve and its freshwater lake behind the dunes, and the small fishing port. It is at its loveliest at sunset, when the sun sinks into the ocean. The beach is free, and summer weekends are crowded. Waves and currents are strong, so swim only in supervised areas and watch the flags, especially with children.
