One of the best-loved popular beaches in Kedah, at the mouth of the Merbok River, with the towering Mount Jerai rising to the north in a fine backdrop. People from across the state come to stroll and eat at weekends. Along the beach are a large food court and many stalls selling seafood and Kedah dishes such as laksa Kedah and prawn noodles, with shops for souvenirs, kites and children's toys, shelters and prayer rooms. The beach suits picnics and photographs more than swimming, as the water is murky so close to the river mouth. A fun extra is a small boat that crosses the estuary in minutes to the fishing town of Tanjung Dawai, where fresh and dried seafood is sold, for a small fare. It gets very crowded at weekends and on public holidays, and is loveliest before sunset. Combine it in one day with nearby Mount Jerai and the Bujang Valley.
