Mežotne Palace is a manor house in Mežotne Parish, Bauska Municipality, in the Semigallia region of southern Latvia, about 9 km west of Bauska and 57 km south of Riga in a straight line. It is one of the finest examples of Neoclassical architecture in Latvia. In 1795 Empress Catherine II of Russia granted the estate to Charlotte von Lieven, tutor to her grandchildren, and it later became her family's hereditary property. Building began in 1797 under the architect Johann Georg Adam Berlitz, following a Neoclassical design by the Italian architect Giacomo Quarenghi, and was finished in 1802. The elegant white palace, with columns, a central dome and two symmetrical wings, stands in a large English-style park on the bank of the Lielupe river, surrounded by tall trees and green lawns. From the garden side its classical facade looks calm and balanced. Visitors tour the restored rooms and the riverside park. The palace makes a trip from Riga and is often combined with nearby Rundāle Palace and Bauska Castle.
